How to Download and Set Up a Crypto Wallet

A crypto wallet is an app that holds the keys to your coins and lets you send and receive them. Setting one up takes about ten minutes: download the app from the official website or official app store listing only, create a new wallet, write your 12–24-word recovery phrase on paper, confirm it, and you are ready to receive crypto. The major free wallets in 2026 are MetaMask (Ethereum and EVM chains), Trust Wallet (broad multi-chain), Exodus (beginner-friendly multi-chain desktop and mobile) and Phantom (Solana); for larger holdings a hardware wallet (Ledger, Trezor) keeps your keys offline. The one rule that protects you from nearly every wallet scam: your recovery phrase is never typed into a website, never sent to support, never photographed — anyone who has it has your money. Which wallet for which coin?

Safe download checklist

1. Type the official URL yourself — metamask.io, trustwallet.com, exodus.com, phantom.com, ledger.com, trezor.io — or use the official iOS or Android store listing, checking the developer name and review count before you install. Fake wallet apps are the single most common wallet scam.
2. Create the wallet on the device you will pay from. Moving a wallet between devices later is possible, but it means handling your recovery phrase again, which is exactly when mistakes happen.
3. Write the recovery phrase on paper — twice, stored in two separate places. Not in a screenshot, not in cloud notes, not in email, not in a password manager you access from the same phone.
4. Confirm the phrase when prompted, then set a strong device PIN or biometric lock.
5. Receive a small test amount before you move anything significant.

Custodial vs self-custody in one paragraph

Coins left on an exchange are in the exchange’s custody — convenient, perfectly fine for small amounts, but you are relying on their security and their rules, including withdrawal limits and delays. A self-custody wallet (everything above) means you hold the keys: nobody can freeze or lose your coins but you, and nobody can recover them for you either. For paying at a store, either works — checkout gives you an address and any wallet can send to it. The practical difference shows up under a rate-lock timer, where an exchange’s withdrawal confirmations and two-factor prompts can outlast the countdown.

Getting the network right

Some coins exist on more than one blockchain. USDT is the classic trap: the same stablecoin runs on Ethereum (ERC-20) and Tron (TRC-20) under one name, on completely separate networks. When you send, your wallet asks which network to use, and it must match the one shown on our checkout page exactly. Pick the wrong one and the payment will not arrive. Two habits prevent almost every mistake: copy the address with the copy button rather than typing it, and select the network from the checkout screen rather than from memory. FAQ

Are these wallets free?

Yes — every software wallet named above is free to download and use. You only ever pay the blockchain’s own network fee when you send. Hardware wallets are physical devices and cost roughly £50–150.

Can one wallet hold all my coins?

Trust Wallet and Exodus cover every coin we accept in a single app. More experienced users often run MetaMask for Ethereum and Phantom for Solana side by side, because each is built specifically for its chain.

What if I lose my phone?

Your coins live on the blockchain, not on the handset. They are recoverable on a new device using your recovery phrase — which is precisely why the paper backup matters more than the phone does. Lose the phrase as well and the coins are gone permanently; there is no reset link.
